This week Honda gave us a look at the all-new 2013 Honda Accord Sedan and Coupe, on sale this fall. The new Accord is more spacious than before with a cutting edge design and exterior.

"This car is the most sculpted and the most dynamic Accord yet," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of product planning for American Honda, in a released statement. "Following Honda's long-held philosophy of 'man maximum, machine minimum,' the beautiful exterior evolved from a focus on interior space and the needs of the people inside it."

At first glance you may not recognize the 2013 Accord with a new look that is defined by a new grille and styling lines on the hood. Lines from the headlights flow to the door handles while parallel lines from the fog lights run along the bottom of the door and create a sense of movement. The front of the Accord eases into the back end which features inward sloping fenders and a solid rear appearance with the slightest lip trimming the trunk.

The aerodynamic shape features a nearly flush windshield, flush-mounted windshield wipers and careful under-body tailoring promise enhanced fuel efficiency, according to Honda. Although the exterior has been shortened, the interior has produced increased passenger and cargo space, Honda says.

Honda Mall of Georgia: Honda sales set another record

American Honda has reported a seventh consecutive monthly sales record with the Honda Division posting July sales of 104,119 units, a 46.4 percent increase from July 2011. The manufacturer of both Honda and Acura reported total unit sales of 116,944 units, a 45.3 percent increase compared to total sales in July of last year.

"As our sales momentum continues to build through the summer, Honda is experiencing its best year-to-date sales in four years," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales, in a released statement. "With success growing along with inventory, it's wonderful to once again be able to meet the strong retail customer demand for our great Honda products."

The Honda Division sales were highlighted by 28,639 unit sales of the Accord, up more than 70 percent Honda says. The Civic followed suit, posting an increase of 78 percent with 25,004 units sold. Honda's redesigned CR-V posted another monthly sales record, and a new July record according to Honda, with 20,554 units sold; a nearly 47 percent increase over July 2011. Rounding out the huge percent increases was the Odyssey minivan with 88 percent jump from last July, ending with 11,953 units sold.

Honda Mall of Georgia: HondaLink helps with hands free

Mobile devices have permeated nearly every aspect of our daily lives, and automakers have noticed. Wednesday, Honda introduced HondaLink, a new in-vehicle connectivity system that will debut on the 2013 Honda Accord this fall. The service will integrate cloud-based news, information and media using an audio-based system interface with Aha radio by Harman included.

"HondaLink will enable customers to put away their phone and still stay connected to the people, music and media they love," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of product planning for American Honda, in a released statement. "By creating an intuitive and customizable user interface, HondaLink allows drivers to access digital content as easily as choosing a radio station."

The premise of the HondaLink system is to allow owners to preset content on their phone and then enjoy personalized content accessible via voice recognition, steering-wheel mounted controls and in-dash audio system controls once in the vehicle. A connected smartphone will serve as a conduit to cloud-based media, according to Honda, allowing the HondaLink to make a connected driving experience one-of-a-kind.

According to Honda, with the Aha service HondaLink users can listen to Facebook and Twitter audio newsfeeds, podcasts, location-based personalized restaurant listings from Yelp!, and internet music services from Slacker.

Honda has big plans for the HondaLink system, with updates and growing content throughout the life of the vehicle and system. Software updates for the smartphone used in the HondaLink system will keep the experience user-friendly, Honda says, with Pandora internet radio and voice-to-voice SMS text services with pre-programmed responses integrated into the system as well.

Honda Mall of Georgia: American Honda posts best June sales in 4 years

Last week, American Honda reported an increase of 48.8 percent compared with June 2011 with sales of 124,808 units, including Acura sales. The Honda Division sold 109,438 units in June 2012 an increase of 45.6 percent compared to the same month last year.

"With robust inventories and great customer demand, it feels good to be back in the race," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales, in a released statement. "The strong performance of our core models, including another record-breaking month for the CR-V, demonstrates the fundamental competitiveness of Honda products."

The CR-V sold 23,282 units, setting a new June record and up more than 50 percent from June 2011, according to Honda. The Honda Accord also saw a huge increase in sales from June of last year with more than 28,000 units sold, an 80 percent increase. Included in those top sellers was the Civic, whose sales were also up 50 percent from last June.

Honda Mall of Georgia: "Brand of the Year" awarded to Honda

Honda announced this week they were named “Brand of the Year” in the 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend Equity Study. Honda claimed the top spot in the “Full Line Automotive” category, receiving the highest numerical Equity Score among the full line automotive brands in the study.

“This study offers strong evidence that the Honda brand continues to be well-regarded by American consumers,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of National Marketing Operations for American Honda, in a released statement. “The combination of strong brand equity and a fresh line-up of new models that resonate with customers will drive strong growth for us this year.”

The 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend Equity Study was based on opinions of 38,529 U.S. consumers age 15 and over who responded online between January 31 and February 20, 2012, according the the press release. The poll is an annual study designed to survey U.S. consumers about brand perceptions, familiarity with the brand and brand purchase consideration.

Honda Mall of Georgia: Honda ranks fifth in Intital Quality

For the second straight year, Honda is the highest ranking mass-market, non-premium brand in the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Initial Quality Study. All told, Honda ranked fifth among all industry nameplates and two Honda auto plants also received awards.

"For the second consecutive year our performance demonstrates our consistent commitment to deliver the highest quality for our customers," said Tetsuo Iwamura, president & CEO of American Honda Motor Co., Inc, in a released statement. "Thanks to the efforts of Honda associates in R&D, in manufacturing and in sales, we were able to continue to improve quality performance in this key industry ranking."

The Honda brand improved for the fourth straight year, and maintained its top performing mass market position from last year.

 

Leading in the compact crossover SUV category was the 2012Honda CR-V. Receiving four or five stars in all categories but one, the CR-V was tops in Overall Quality and ranked "Among the Best." Five other Honda models finished in the top-2 for their segments; the Accord for midsize car; the Odyssey for minivan; the Crosstour for midsize crossover SUV; the Ridgeline (midsize pickup); and the Fit (sub-compact car) were all four or five-star rated models in their respective categories.

Surprisingly, the Honda Civic did not finish at the top of its segment, but typically, was awarded five stars and ranked "Among the Best."

Honda as a whole surveyed to have just 83 problems per 100 vehicles, well below the industry average of 102 (PP100), good enough for the fifth spot in the nameplate rankings. According to J.D. Power and Associates, the study is based on responses from more than 74,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2012 model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership and a 228-question metric to help industries improve products.
